Treaty Medals at Toronto Coin Expo 2024 Spring Sale

It is difficult to conceive of a numismatic item with more history than Treaty Medals and Indian Chief Peace Medals.

In recent years, the Canadian Numbered Treaty medals have rightfully gained recognition for not just their numismatic significance but increasingly for their historical and cultural importance. They are rare, tangible artifacts of the relationship between the Canadian government and this country’s First Nations. Geoffrey Bell Auctions is delighted to present this remarkable Treaty 5 medal as one of the signature offerings of our May 2024 Toronto Coin Expo sale.

Also available is an undated example of the Treaty Medal. The design is as last, however, the treaty number and last digit in the date were never punched. The medal would have been struck, ordered, and delivered by the Canadian government from the Wyons at the same time as other medals that were distributed.

The George III Indian Peace Medal represents a category of medals awarded to the Indigenous peoples of North America by the British for services rendered during the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and even later. They have been avidly collected since at least the mid-19th century and have long been featured among the great rarities in the Canadian (and America) series. The medal offered in our Toronto Coin Expo 2024 Spring Sale can be traced back to the original recipient, Ottawa Chief Egonemay (variously spelt), presumably for his participation with the British during the Revolutionary War.
